LING 1020 - Will Styler

Administrative Note

Today’s Agenda

Although I haven’t said it explicitly, this course is all about Typology

Language Typology

The process of comparing languages and establishing relationships and universals among them

Typology lets us make claims

Typological information is useful, but requires hard work!

The Typology process

Step 2 is a problem for African languages

Indo-European - “As much data as you can get”

African Languages - “As much data as you can get”

This is an even bigger problem for Africa because…

Africa is big

There’s lots of linguistic diversity

Linguistic diversity in Africa

Travel to Africa is complicated (in some places)

Language documentation is hard once you get there

So, we know a lot less about African languages than we’d like to.

… but we still do our best!

Africa has four main language families

… but we’re not quite sure about two of them

… but these classifications are the best we’ve got!

Today, we’re working with…

Nilo-Saharan Languages!

Features of Nilo-Saharan Languages

Singulative/Collective Number System

Singulative/Collective Number System

English is a “Singular/Plural” system

“Bad movie”

“Bad movies

(Armageddon was OK, I guess)

The default for a word in Singular/Plural systems is singular.

In a Singulative-Collective System, the default is plural

ŋɛɛti ‘lice’

ŋɛɛti-n ‘louse’.

So, in Nilo-Saharan Languages, plural is usually the default, and singular needs to be marked.

Beyond that, there aren’t really specific features across Nilo-Saharan.

Two Common Features of African Languages

Level Tone

Tone

Changes in pitch during the word change the meaning of the word

There are two types of Tone Language

Vietnamese Tone Contours

Level Tone

Zarma (Djerma)
Nilo-Saharan:Songhay - Niger

Yesterday - “bi”

Wound - “bi”

(Zarma also has rise and fall, but I couldn’t find recordings of it)

Tone is not intonation!

Now, our other feature…

ATR-based Vowel Systems

ATR (“Advanced Tongue Root”)

ATR

Dholuo
Nilo-Saharan - Kenya/Tanzania

ATR Harmony

When all vowels in the word must be either +ATR or -ATR

Karamojong
Nilo-Saharan - Uganda

ɑkɪdɔŋ - “to castrate”

ATR Harmony is common throughout Africa

Features of Nilo-Saharan Languages

“Uh, OK… but why did you use”to castrate” as an example there?“

Because it’s the best example I found

This represents a truth of field linguistics
