Formal Classroom Policies vs. Classroom Norms

• Formal Classroom Policies are enforceable and formalized
  • This sets grading and Academic Integrity standards
  • The equivalent of “You cannot steal other people’s property or you will be jailed”
  • Violating these rules has consequences which strongly affect your life
• Classroom norms are social, widely agreed upon, and guide our collective action
  • These remind you how you and your classmates have agreed to act
  • The equivalent of “Don’t use your bare hands to grab lettuce from a salad bar while coughing loudly onto the croutons”
  • Violating these rules makes you a jerk, and makes others judge you, even if you likely won’t be arrested.

The Formal LIGN 1 AI Policy

• “Using Generative ‘AI’ (e.g. ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini/NotebookLM) for take-home assignments this cannot be prevented, and thus is allowed”

• “… even though we can’t reasonably ‘ban’ AI, we won’t accept obviously sloppy work without penalizing it, no matter whether you wrote it by hand or using AI”

• “… Students who treat ‘AI’ as a lifehack on assignments generally just delay their failure until the exam”

• “During exams, no electronic devices or unauthorized assistance (including AI) is allowed.”
